Why write a text you won't send?

When you want to text an ex, most of the pressure is about getting the words out. The message has been going round your head for an hour, and sending it feels like the only way to make it stop. Writing it somewhere it can't reach them gets the words out without handing your night to whether they reply.

There's research behind this too. Writing about painful experiences, rather than keeping them in, is linked to better wellbeing in many studies, and you don't need anyone to read it for that to work. Our guide towriting an unsent letter to your ex goes deeper, with examples.

Is anything saved?

No. What you type stays in this tab. It isn't stored, it isn't sent to us, and it's gone when you close the page or tap "Let it go". We only count that someone used the tool, never what they wrote.

Still want to send it?

That's allowed. Wait until tomorrow, read it again, and take our2-minute "Should I text my ex?" quiz. If it's late, you've been drinking or you'd be crushed by no reply, give it one more day. Our list ofwhat to do instead of texting your ex at 2amhas more ideas for the next ten minutes.

FAQ: Unsent texts

Does this actually send anything?

No. There is no send. What you type stays in this browser tab, it isn't saved or uploaded, and it's gone when you close the page.

Why write a text you won't send?

Most of the pressure behind a late-night text is the need to get the words out of your head. Writing them down does that part. Once they're out, it's easier to look at what you actually wanted from sending it.

What if I still want to send it after writing it?

Wait until tomorrow and read it again in daylight. If it still feels right, keep it short and decide in advance that no reply is an answer too. Our quiz can help you decide.

Is this the same as Heal's unsent texts?

It's a small version of it. In the Heal app, unsent texts live in a chat that looks like theirs, you can keep them in a private journal, and an AI coach replies instead of your ex.
